Teen Writing Course: So You Want to Write the Perfect First Chapter?

Want to write the story that you think has been missing from your school library? Have you been told that you’re a good storyteller, but haven’t been able to get the words on the page? This interactive online six-week course will help you build a seamless beginning to the novel you’ve been aching to write.

 

You will learn how to:

create character sketches
bring a setting to life
craft “drama” (aka conflict)
set the stage for plot
write realistic dialogue
love revising

Instructors:

Pamela Harris fell in love with books after reading Green Eggs and Ham at the age of three. She now lists Ellen Hopkins, John Green, Courtney Summers, and Matt de la Pena as some of her favorite authors. Pam received her MFA at Fairleigh Dickinson University and completed her thesis on young adult (YA) literature. She is a YA writer represented by Sarah LaPolla of Bradford Literary Agency.

 

Marquita Hockaday began writing and reading in elementary school. She completed her first novel at the ripe age of eleven years old. Marquita’s favorite authors are Blake Nelson, Laurie Halse Anderson and Maggie Stiefvater. She also received her MFA at Fairleigh Dickinson University where she focused on a combination of young adult (YA) and adult voices in her thesis. Marquita is a YA writer with a Virginia teaching certificate in secondary English.

Racquel Henry is a Trinidadian writer, editor, and writing coach with an MFA from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She is a part-time English Professor and owns Writer’s Atelier. Racquel is also the co-founder and Editor at Black Fox Literary Magazine and the Editor-in-Chief at Voyage YA. She is the author of Holiday on Park, Letter to Santa, and The Writer’s Atelier Little Book of Writing Affirmations. Her fiction, poetry, and nonfiction have appeared in various literary magazines and anthologies. When she’s not working, you can find her watching Hallmark Christmas movies.
