Your writing space can tell a lot about your writing. Some writers are organized while others can live on the outer boundaries of space. From Plotters to Pantsers, your writing space is unique to you.
My writing space hasn’t evolved that much since I started writing. I have an “office,” but my true office is anywhere I have access to a keyboard. It is a space where I’m at, and does not confine, or define, my ability to write. I’ve written in a movie theater waiting for a movie to begin, while we were out to breakfast, in the car, and a thousand other places. When you are lost in your imagination, you can be anywhere physically as long as you are in the story mentally.
My official office space is where I try to contain the tools I use. It is a store, a studio, and the odd place where I need to be alone. It has my most powerful computer now, a gaming system that can handle the heavy graphics and audio software I need for bringing my stories to life using visuals and audio or to stream video podcasts. It is also where I keep my paperback books, audiobooks, and other merchandise that I sell in my store or take with me to conventions.
I do most of my writing on either my iPad or my laptop. My favorite places to write are where I can be out in nature. We have a travel trailer and spend a lot of time glamping—I’m at the age where having a microwave, bed, bathroom, and power is essential, LOL.
I also write outside on the back patio when weather permits or on the top of a mountain in North Carolina. While I write at all times of the day, I do my best writing in the afternoons to early evening, mostly because that was the only time I had when I was working full-time. Now, my writing schedule is a little more varied due to me having more flexibility and additional demands of being in business for myself.
The key to finding your writing niche is to find what works for you. Some people are early birds, some love quiet afternoons, others are night owls. The important thing is to write! It can be a sentence, an edit, an idea, whatever, but don’t give up. Be true to your writing style, love what you do, and let the passion shine through.
