The Write Place #39: Jenna Hartley

When it comes to writing, I find the process a bit like assembling a puzzle. I gather all the pieces, but I can’t always see the design until they come together. Each book is so different—which is part of the fun (and sometimes, the frustration!).

I primarily write in a small corner of my bedroom, though I used to venture out to my local library. Up until a few months ago, I wrote on a small desk, the top a mosaic design I’d completed the summer after college. But it was always a bit small. It would barely fit my laptop. I couldn’t cross my legs comfortably. And I couldn’t fit a normal notebook on it at the same time as my laptop.

This summer I finally upgraded to a real desk, and it felt like such a big deal. It was something I ordered online, and it can actually break down easily to save space (though I haven’t done that), but it’s so much bigger than my old set up.

Ironically—despite my large new desk—I like to keep the space devoid of things. There are no pen cups or framed pictures, just my laptop, a notebook, and a pen. And my headphones. I’m not a big fan of visual clutter anywhere, but especially in my workspace. An organized desk helps keep my head clear and focused, especially when the rest of life can be so chaotic.

Jenna Hartley writes about strong, independent women and the men who dare to love them. Her characters aren’t perfect; they’re authentic. Her passion is to make their stories feel as real for readers as they do to her, infusing each one with sexy, sweet, and laughable moments that reflect real love.

You can find Jenna on her website, Facebook, Instagram, Amazon, BookBub, and Goodreads.
