The Write Place #38: Marie Long

Usually, I’m a night owl, and I do a lot of writing in bed. But during the day, I have a dedicated home-office where I get a lot of writing done. It’s a cozy little IKEA secretary desk in the corner. My office is full of NaNoWriMo posters, books, and everything else literary-related. Honestly, I can write anywhere, but this is where I spend most of my time. I’m also usually working on more than one project at once, so I have multiple dedicated tools for that.

My Penna keyboard + tablet is used for my word sprints of new manuscripts, and I do my revisions/cleanup work on my old Macbook Pro.

I always heat up my scented candles when I get ready to work, and it puts me into a productive mood. I also listen to music, sometimes from Brain.fm if I’m writing new words, and other times I use specialized playlists, depending on the story I’m currently editing/rewriting.

I recently got some affirmation cards that I use every time I sit down and write. Each card is different, and helps me to stay motivated on the current project(s).

I try to keep my area clean and sparse to avoid distractions. Clutter can do that to the brain and make you lose focus. My little area sparks joy for me, and is where I feel most productive!
