The Write Place #31: Kelly Coon

Ahhh, my writing space.

Well, here’s a trigger warning for anyone who is skeeved out by clutter, because my desk is a hot mess express.

I was going to clean it up for this post, but honestly, that wouldn’t be real life. I’m one of those creative types who knows where everything is, but probably nobody else will. My work itself is super organized, but my workspace?

DEFINITELY NOT.

In sharing this, I wanted all those writers who don’t have fancy mahogany desks and espresso machines and a babbling brook in the background to know that you can still crank out a few novels (I’ve written five in this space) under similar conditions. Even if life is messy and your kid’s artwork is your mousepad.

Even if you have little notes to yourself and doodles in approximately fifty locations.

Even if you’re not perfect.

Because mess happens. Life is just that way. And for me, I can’t say I’m not going to KonMari the heck out of my desk one day and leave it like that, but today is not that day. I have 1,500 words to write, and they are not gonna write themselves.

The path that gets me from page one to The End is often a disaster, and if that just happens to be how I work, then I’m at the point in my life where I accept myself exactly as I am and work with what I’ve got.

Kelly’s YA fantasy novel, Gravemaidens will be out on October 29, 2019! If you’re local, you can catch her at the launch party! It will be at Oxford Exchange in Tampa, FL on November 3, 2019 at 2 PM!

Thank you, Kelly! Kelly has also taken the time to give us four great writing tips for our Patreon family.

Kelly Coon is an editor for Blue Ocean Brain, a member of the Washington Post Talent Network, a former high school English teacher, ACT test prep book author, and a wicked karaoke singer in training. She adores giving female characters the chance to flex their muscles and use their brains, and wishes every story got the happy ending she’s living near Tampa with her three sons, brilliant husband, and a rescue pup who will steal your sandwich. Kelly is the author of Gravemaidens, the first book in a YA fantasy duology, out October 29. You can preorder the novel now and enter the giveaway. The sequel is scheduled to come out in 2020, but for now, you can find Kelly at her website and over on Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Racquel Henry is a Trinidadian writer, editor, and writing coach with an MFA from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She is a part-time English Professor and owns Writer’s Atelier. Racquel is also the co-founder and Editor at Black Fox Literary Magazine and the Editor-in-Chief at Voyage YA. She is the author of Holiday on Park, Letter to Santa, and The Writer’s Atelier Little Book of Writing Affirmations. Her fiction, poetry, and nonfiction have appeared in various literary magazines and anthologies. When she’s not working, you can find her watching Hallmark Christmas movies.
