1. Helen: A Literary Magazine

Helen: A Literary Magazine based in Las Vegas, Nevada is holding their first short story competition. They are seeking short fiction between 500-5,000 words that honor the theme: “Strong Female Lead.”  All submissions will be read blindly. Entry fee includes a year-long PDF subscription. The winning story will receive $100 and publication in the inaugural issue. All entries will be considered for publication. Entry fee is $12.

2. The Saturday Evening Post

In its nearly three centuries of existence, The Saturday Evening Post has published short fiction by a who’s who of American authors including F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, Anne Tyler, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Ray Bradbury, Louis L’Amour, Sinclair Lewis, Jack London, and Edgar Allan Poe. You have the opportunity to join their illustrious line-up by entering The Saturday Evening Post’s Third Annual Great American Fiction Contest.

The winning story will be published in the Jan/Feb 2015 edition of The Saturday Evening Post, and the author will receive a $500 payment. Five runners-up will each receive a $100 cash payment and will also have their stories published online. Entry fee is $10 and the contest deadline is July 1, 2014.

3. Crazyhorse

Crazyhorse will accept entries for the annual short-short fiction contest. Submit three short-shorts of up to 500 words each. First place will win $1,000 and publication; three runners-up will be announced. All entries will be considered by the editors for publication, and the $15 entry fee includes a one-year subscription to Crazyhorse. Deadline: July 31, 2014.

4. 2014 Arcadia Fiction Chapbook Contest

A prize of $1,000 and twenty-five author copies will be given annually for a fiction chapbook. The chapbook will also be published by Arcadia and distributed as an issue of the magazine to subscribers. All individual stories submitted will be considered for publication in Arcadia. The editors will judge and a winner will be announced in September. The winning chapbook will appear as the summer issue of Arcadia. Submit a manuscript of thirty to forty-five pages with a $20.00 entry fee by August 15, 2014Arcadia is also accepting submissions for the 2014 Ruby Irene Poetry Chapbook contest.

5. There Will Be Words Prose Poetry Chapbook Contest

There Will Be Words is expanding its mission to include prose poetry. Their first show dedicated to prose poetry will take place on December 9, 2014. To celebrate this, they want to publish the first ever solo prose poetry chapbook collection.

The winner will receive:

  • 10% of the first print run
  • 40% of the net profits from chapbook sales from the first print run
  • A spot on the December 9, 2014 show as a featured reader
  • Promotion leading up to the event
  • Support in getting their chapbook reviewed by literary magazines

*All who submit manuscripts will receive a copy of the winner’s chapbook.

Grist: The Journal for Writers is now reading for Issue 8! They seek quality fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction, as well as essays devoted to discussions of craft.
