Motivational Minute #194: Let the Writing Take Its Time

Our founder, Racquel Henry is back with another timely Motivational Minute on Writer’s Atelier TV! (See what we did there?)

Lately, Racquel’s been feeling some frustration with her recent draft. She told herself she’d complete it by a certain date, but that hasn’t happened. Scenes aren’t unfolding neatly, and fixing them is taking longer than she’d like. Any writer would get irritated!

That’s when she went back to something she’s always said: writers need to allow stories to take the time they need to take.

Now, deadlines are great, and they exist for a reason. But often—most especially when those deadlines are self-imposed—we can get so caught up on dates that we forget about letting the story evolve the way it’s meant to evolve. Stories and their authors need time and space. When she coaches writers in The Write Gym, Racquel will often give the advice to step away from the manuscript because being able to look at the page with fresh eyes can make all the difference.

Racquel knows she’ll figure out those pesky scenes eventually. And she also knows, with a little time, you’ll figure out your story’s snags, too.

Happy writing!
