Motivational Minute #175: Writers Should Think Like Mathematicians

It’s what you’ve been waiting for—another Motivational Minute from our fearless leader, Racquel Henry!

This video’s title and topic was a surprise, wasn’t it? On the surface, writing and math seem like oil and water—two things that don’t mix.

But that’s not true. Math, at its core, is all about problem solving. That’s a skill everyone should develop—and writers are no exception! Problems pop up in our stories all the time. One day, your character will refuse to take the next step on the journey you so lovingly mapped out for them. The next, you realize that your setting has clashing details, or you made a mistake in your timeline math, or any of a thousand other things that can go wrong in your story.

Racquel says, don’t panic. It’s not the end of the world. Every problem can be solved. Sometimes you get an epiphany in the shower or while you’re driving, but sometimes you have to think like a mathematician: identify your variables, apply logic, and solve those problems!

Happy writing!
