Motivational Minute with Megan Fuentes #147: Change Your Plan (NaNoWriMo 2021 Midpoint)

Is it just us, or has NaNoWriMo flown by? All of us at Writer’s Atelier hope you’ve had a very fulfilling National Novel Writing Month thus far—and if you aren’t participating, that your November has brought you good things.

But if your NaNoWriMo hasn’t been as successful as you’ve wanted, it’s easy to beat yourself up for it. Our administrative assistant, Megan Fuentes, knows what that’s like. When you have a perfect picture of how things are going to go, and reality doesn’t match up for one reason or another, what can really be done?

Megan’s advice: don’t stick to a plan that isn’t working for you!

For her, this idea had to be put into action when she struggled to use the long, glorious hours between when she wakes up and when she goes to work (in the late afternoon or early evening) for writing. Her body wanted to sleep in or work on more mindless, non-creative tasks. It was extremely frustrating.

But then she thought back to her childhood, and to her lifelong habit of staying up far past a reasonable bedtime. Of course she isn’t going to be successful in the morning—she’s a born evening writer! It wasn’t her that was the problem, it was the plan.

Maybe you’re in a similar situation. Maybe your real life is not meshing well with the dream of a writing life you’ve imagined. But you should not let that discourage you from pursuing your goals. Maybe it’s just a sign you need a fresh approach.

Happy writing!
