Motivational Minute with Paige Lavoie #90: Be Realistic with Yourself

Paige Lavoie is sometimes bad at sticking to her self-imposed deadlines. If you are too, boy, does she ever have some advice for you in Motivational Minute #90 on Writer’s Atelier TV!

Here’s a little example from Paige’s writing life: she declared her intentions to finish revisions within the week at a time when she’s only gotten to the halfway point in her novel. And, of course, it’s already a crazy-busy week.

It’s great to set deadlines for ourselves, but we need to be realistic when we do so. Look at how long it typically takes you to do those things, then add some wiggle room. You know how many twists and turns your life can take. You can’t predict them, but you can try your best to prepare for them.

Just as important is being kind and forgiving to yourself when goals fall through. When that happens, reset your guidelines to fit a timeline that’s more realistic. Learn from those experiences.

Remember: part of creating healthy habits is failing a few times to figure out what truly works for you.

Happy writing!
