Motivational Minute with Paige Lavoie #86: It’s Okay to Rewrite

Paige is gearing you up for rewriting your work on Motivational Minute #86 on Writer’s Atelier TV.

It’s okay to rewrite paragraphs. It’s okay to rewrite sentences. It’s okay to rewrite entire novels. Sometimes, that’s just kind of what we have to do when entire scenes refuse to cooperate.

When a scene is frustrating you, it’s always a good idea to save your work and distance yourself from it before you do anything drastic, like delete all those hard-earned words only to realize a few days later that the fourth paragraph of the sixth chapter was actually perfectly fine.

However, sometimes a block requires you to open up a new document and work through a scene in a completely new way—for example, writing in another character’s perspective to see where they’re coming from. Even if you don’t land on switching the point of view, it can be really helpful to develop empathy for that character. You can even end up using those ideas later on in your story.

Be experimental. Have fun. Don’t be scared to rewrite.

Happy writing!
