The Write Place #15: Christina Farley

The great part about being a writer is you don’t have to write in a particular space. If you’ve got a computer or a pencil and paper, you can write! I do have a desk where I can write. It’s special since it was handmade in Indonesia while I lived there. But often I find myself writing wherever I am. It could be on the sidelines of the soccer pitch, my car, library, backyard, or a coffee shop. My motto is: write when you can. It doesn’t have to be the perfect spot. For my writing place, I love to surround myself with things that inspire and remind me of why I’m writing.

1. A picture of my sister and I in France. She is my muse.

2. The letters from kids who have shared what they loved about my books. I write for them!

3. My published books because they remind me that I’m not a complete hack!

You’ll often find me writing with candles to evoke a mood. Plus since scents can pull you into a moment or a memory, it’s a good signal to my brain to get me back into the world of my story.

I also love to listen to music while I write. When I’m drafting, I play on my i-Pod playlist that I create specifically for the book I’m working on. Usually it’s instrumental like a movie soundtrack. It really helps block out noise at home, but more importantly, it draws me into the world I’m creating.

I can’t forget to mention my writer’s stash! You’ll probably find Peppermint Patties and a cup of coffee at my side. Trust me, these make deadlines bearable.
